Are your sustainability claims backed by evidence?

Sustainability Legislation

New legislation due to come into effect from September 2027 will increase scrutiny of environmental and sustainability claims made by businesses.

Businesses promoting themselves as “green”, “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” will need to ensure these claims can be supported by credible evidence, recognised accreditation, certification or measurable data. Unsupported claims could be challenged as greenwashing.

To help businesses prepare, VisitEngland has produced resources and guidance on regenerative tourism and current tourism legislation.

Janet Nuzum, Sector Manager at Liverpool City Region Destination Partnership, said:

“For visitor economy businesses across Liverpool City Region, this new legislation shouldn’t be viewed as a regulatory challenge but as a real commercial opportunity. More visitors, event organisers and corporate buyers are looking for businesses that can demonstrate a genuine commitment to sustainability, and those that can evidence their achievements will be best placed to stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

“The legislation will help create greater transparency and confidence for consumers, while rewarding businesses that are taking meaningful action. Sustainability is no longer just good practice; it can help attract new customers, strengthen reputation and support long-term business growth.

“We would encourage businesses to start preparing now by reviewing any sustainability claims they make and ensuring they are backed by clear evidence. The Liverpool City Region Sustainability Toolkit offers practical support, guidance and resources to help businesses on that journey, whatever stage they are at.”
