John Corellis, Marketing Director of Boxpark
We recently caught up with John Corellis, Marketing Director of Boxpark, to delve into the success and future plans of this vibrant venue, and to learn why he believes becoming a VisitLiverpool member is a must for businesses in the region.
John, what’s been happening at Boxpark since your grand opening?
“Business is booming. Our launch weekend was a triumph, featuring sold-out shows from Girls Don’t Sync, Enzo is Burning and Mele. The atmosphere was electric, and it set the tone for what Boxpark Liverpool aims to offer.
“We’ve continued to thrive with our weekly events, from Move Monday Latin American dance classes and Tuesday night quiz shows to hosting packed audiences for the England games during Euro 2024. We’re gearing up for a phenomenal weekend with Sister Sledge’s Kathy Sledge on July 13th, followed by the Euro 2024 final on the 14th. It’s going to be spectacular.”
You’ve recently become a Partner of VisitLiverpool and Liverpool Convention Bureau. What prompted this decision?
“Bringing Boxpark to Liverpool was about more than just establishing a venue; it was about embedding ourselves into the city’s fabric. VisitLiverpool and the Liverpool Convention Bureau excel at showcasing the best this city has to offer. Our partnership felt like a natural fit as it allows us to further our mission of celebrating live music, food, and entertainment. By working closely with VisitLiverpool, we can amplify our presence and build valuable relationships within the community, ensuring Boxpark Liverpool is a place that locals are proud to call their own.
“Becoming a VisitLiverpool member offers numerous benefits. From increased visibility and promotional support to networking opportunities and valuable insights into the city’s tourism trends, the advantages are substantial. VisitLiverpool showcases the best of what the region has to offer, making it an essential partner for any business looking to thrive in the future.”
How are you finding the city region? What’s your favourite hidden gem that you feel more visitors should know about?
“Liverpool is full of hidden treasures, but if I had to pick three, I’d start with Bold Street’s Elif Restaurant for the best Turkish food in town. Their friendly staff and top-notch chefs make it perfect for any occasion. For a drink, Hummingbird, on North John Street, is a must-visit. Their mixologists craft both signature cocktails and beloved classics to perfection. And for live music, Kazimier Gardens is unparalleled. With a great dance space and extra upstairs seating, it’s the ideal spot for both lively nights and quiet drinks.
Which upcoming Boxpark Liverpool event are you most excited about promoting this year and why?
“I’m particularly thrilled about our first Black Card Session featuring Sister Sledge with Kathy Sledge. Taking place on our Terrace area, it promises a night of timeless disco hits just before the Euro 2024 final. This event encapsulates what Boxpark Liverpool is all about – bringing people together for unforgettable experiences, surrounded by great music and good vibes.”
If you could wave a magic wand and make a wish, come true for Liverpool City Region’s visitor economy, what would it be?
“Like a lot of people, I’d love to bring a high-speed railway to connect Liverpool with other Northern powerhouse cities like Leeds and Manchester. This would make travel quick, affordable, and seamless, fostering greater collaboration and economic growth across the region.
You’re putting together a ‘Liverpool’ playlist. Which three songs are essential tracks for you?
That’s a fun one! My essential tracks would be:
Luther Vandross – “Never Too Much”
Robin S – “Show Me Love”
Sister Sledge – “He’s the Greatest Dancer”
“To me, these songs perfectly capture the vibrant and eclectic spirit of Liverpool.”
What’s your personal favourite cultural or arts venue in Liverpool City Region and what makes it special?
“It’s got to be FACT Liverpool Art and Cinema Gallery for me. It combines cutting-edge audiovisual artwork from North West artists with state-of-the-art gallery spaces. The cinema upstairs offers a unique experience, showing everything from blockbusters to indie gems. It’s a cultural hub that should not be missed.”
If you could give a tour to any celebrity or historical figure in Liverpool City Region, who would it be and what would you show them first?
“I’d love to bring back all The Beatles to see their legacy on Matthew Street. It’s now a hub of live music bars, crowned by the world-famous Cavern Club where their journey began. Watching them witness their remarkable impact and enduring legacy on the city firsthand would be incredible.
You’re in a lift with a potential visitor. How do you quickly pitch Liverpool City Region as a destination?
“Liverpool City Region offers football, friendly people, fun nights out, and fantastic music all over. It’s a city where history meets contemporary culture, making it an unforgettable destination and a place with a totally unique character. A culture you can’t find anywhere else. Where else would you want to be?”
In conclusion, Boxpark Liverpool has swiftly become a must-visit destination in the heart of Liverpool, offering incredible street food, drinks, and entertainment with most events free to attend.
