Liverpool is looking to appoint experts to play a pivotal role in securing major sporting events as part of the Sport Liverpool Board.

Sport is synonymous with the Liverpool City Region – whether it’s our three famous football clubs; rugby league champions St Helens; as home to Open Championship golf courses at Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool or the world’s leading steeplechase at Aintree; from boxing, athletics, swimming – sport is in our DNA and it offers the perfect place to host sports events.

Following the hosting of sporting events including the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 and World Gymnastics Championships 2022, Liverpool has been named as one of the nine host cities for EURO 2028.

We have a global reputation as a world class host; with fabulous venues, a region that oozes culture and passion and of course the famous Scouse welcome. Liverpool also places equality and diversity as a key driver in everything that we deliver and is committed to ensuring major sports events are inclusive, sustainable and a legacy is at the heart of everything we deliver.

The Sport Liverpool Board provides oversight for existing major sports events as well as focussing its expertise and knowledge in supporting the city region to bid for and achieve future major sports event success.

The Board will advise, inform, and make recommendations to the Local Visitor Economy Partnership Board (LVEP) and the six Liverpool City Region Boroughs it supports to drive the delivery of the city region’s major sports event strategy.

Now in its second term, the board is keen to refresh its membership and appoint a new Chair. It is vital that the board is diverse and would welcome all applicants, and are particularly keen on achieving better representation of people with disabilities, people with ethnically diverse backgrounds and people from the LGBTQ+ community.

We would also like to recruit an athlete voice to this board and would welcome current or former athletes who can provide this elite athlete experience.

We are looking for people who understand the role major sports events, sport and physical activity can play in society and in our city region. We are particularly keen to engage interest from candidates who have relevant experience in one or more of the following areas/sectors in conjunction with Major Sports Events;

  • Sports Event Bidding
  • Elite Athlete Performance
  • Sponsorship, Commercial and Grant Funding
  • Social Impacts incorporating environmental, social and diversity and inclusion
  • Marketing, Media and PR
  • International or National Governing Bodies
  • Visitor Experience

Deadline is 10pm 25 February 2024. For more information on applying download the Sport Liverpool Board Recruitment Pack January 2024
