Eliza Willis, Creative Producer for Culture Liverpool, led on the development and delivery of the winning Eurovision 2023 Euro Festival zone, speaking after receiving the award, she said:
“From the very start, we knew we wanted to deliver the best Eurovision experience ever, not only for lucky ticket holders but for anyone who could make it to Liverpool to celebrate this incredible international event with us. Eurovision is not only a celebration of music but a celebration of cultures as well. So, we knew that we wanted to give people an unbelievably warm welcome, bursting with the warmest of Liverpool welcomes, something that people have come to expect from us.
“But it’s very important to recognise that this project was born from a unique and rewarding international partnership with Ukraine. What made EuroFestival so special was the collaborative and creative relationship we were able to develop by working closely alongside Ukraine.Together, we delivered 19 commissions, out of a total of 24, that were a direct result of a series of creative collaborations between Ukrainian and British artists, showcasing a colourful array of culturally rich projects that we could not have achieved alone.
“Our fun-filled but thought-provoking, 14-day EuroFestival programme highlighted modern Ukrainian artistry and the brightest UK creative talent, launching a fusion of visions that can only happen through the sharing of ideas, passions and cultures – something that Eurovision and Liverpool has always exemplified. For us here at Culture Liverpool, success means working hard to ensure our events deliver in all areas, for all people, carefully considering the total experience, from arrival to departure and everything in between.
“This award shows that an inclusive, collaborative and engaging broader events programme, beyond core events, can make a huge difference in the overall impact and legacy of an event, so we’re thrilled to receive this accolade, together and on behalf of Ukraine, this means a lot to all of us and this success will spur us on.”
