Europe’s elite wheelchair basketball teams are heading to Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena from 11 to 19 September 2027. All Event Passes are on sale from 10am today.
Liverpool has been confirmed as host city for the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027 (WBEURO27), bringing Europe’s elite wheelchair basketball nations to the M&S Bank Arena from 11 to 19 September 2027.
It will be the first time the Championships have been held in the UK since 2015, and the biggest wheelchair basketball event to be staged on home soil in more than a decade.
Wheelchair basketball is one of the fastest and most physical sports on the Paralympic programme, combining full-speed breaks, hard-fought rebounds, tactical play and finishes decided in the dying seconds.
The sport is renowned for its speed, physicality and tactical intensity. Chairs collide, players spin at pace and possession can change in a heartbeat. It is this combination of skill, strategy and spectacle that has made wheelchair basketball one of the most-watched sports at recent Paralympic Games.
And you do not have to be a basketball fan to enjoy it. Wheelchair basketball is a sport for everyone: fast, physical and easy to get caught up in, whether you are a first-time spectator, a family looking for an exciting day out or a die-hard fan. Every game matters.
WBEURO27 carries huge significance for the teams competing, with qualification for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games on the line. For Great Britain, that means a rare opportunity for both the men’s and women’s teams to battle for Paralympic qualification on home soil, backed by a home crowd. It is all to play for.

Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams are currently competing at the 2026 IWBF World Championships in Ottawa, Canada, as they build towards Liverpool 2027. Both teams will be looking to make their mark on the world stage before returning to European Championship action next year, with LA 2028 qualification firmly on the horizon.
The men’s team are already heading into 2027 as Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallists, Great Britain’s best Paralympic result in the sport for 28 years, having also claimed the 2023 European Championship title and the 2018 World Championship crown.
The women’s team meanwhile arrives with a rapidly growing reputation, having claimed European silver in both 2023 and 2025, as well as finishing fifth at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
The European Championships will also give local fans the chance to cheer on athletes with strong connections to the region. Liverpool’s own Abdi Jama is among the wider GB squad, alongside Manchester-based athletes Robyn Love, Laurie Williams and Henley Cavanagh, who are representing Great Britain at the 2026 World Championships.
Home advantage could not come at a better time for Great Britain’s wheelchair basketball teams.
Terry Bywater, Great Britain wheelchair basketball player and Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallist, said:
“Wheelchair basketball is incredibly fast, it’s physical, and there’s so much happening on court that you can barely take your eyes off the game. There’s the noise of the wheels, the collisions, the crowd and the speed of the players. It’s an incredible atmosphere. You can go from one end of the court to the other in seconds and the whole game can change in a heartbeat. I’ve played this sport for more than 25 years and it still gives me a buzz.
