Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) has been crowned Airport of the Year at the Aviation Industry Awards UK 2025, surpassing London Heathrow. It was LJLA’s first time entering the awards, held at Park Plaza London Riverbank, where it was also shortlisted for the Airport Achievement Award.
The awards honour excellence across the UK aviation sector, with the Airport of the Year category recognising outstanding airport management, operational efficiency, passenger experience, and infrastructure development. Eligible to all UK licensed aerodromes, the award highlights innovation, sustainability, and service improvements made over the past 18 months.
Robin Tudor, LJLA’s head of PR and communications, accepted the award, stating:
“It’s always a proud moment to win an industry award like this when you are competing against other leading UK airports, but the judges not only recognised the success we have seen in recent years with year on year growth in passenger numbers, along with our renowned levels of customer service, but also our environmental commitments to decarbonise operations and our work with local communities, too.”
Earlier this month, LJLA narrowly missed a third consecutive win as best UK airport in the Which? consumer poll, losing out to Exeter Airport after topping the rankings in 2023 and 2024.
Over the past year, LJLA has upgraded its security systems and revamped its departure lounge with new and improved food and drink options. August marked its busiest month ever, with 616,000 passengers—a 12% rise from the previous year—following July’s record of 576,000. In August alone, LJLA operated 4,000 flights to 73 destinations across 24 countries, with eight of the top 10 routes heading to summer sun locations.
